Packing List

1. Before entering Ihram

Remove armpit & pubic hair

Trim nails & mustache

Ghusl as for Janabah / shower

Wear Ihram cloth

Apply attar to head and beard (for men, without getting it on Ihram)

Get on the transport to Meeqaat

Say the Dua for travel اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، {سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ * وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ} اللَّهُمَّ إِنّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا البِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَليفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ، وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ[English]

(Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Allaahu 'Akbar, Subhaanal-lathee sakhkhara lanaa haathaa wa maa kunnaa lahu muqrineen. Wa 'innaa 'ilaa Rabbinaa lamunqaliboon. Allaahumma 'innaa nas'aluka fee safarinaa haathal-birrawattaqwaa, waminal-'amalimaa tardhaa, Allaahumma hawwin 'alaynaa safaranaa haathaa watwi 'annaa bu'dahu, Allaahumma 'Antas-saahibu fis-safari, walkhaleefatu fil-'ahli, Allaahumma 'innee 'a'oothu bika min wa'thaa'is-safari, wa ka'aabanl-mandhari, wa soo'il-munqalabi fil-maaliwal'ahli.) Meaning: ‘Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great. Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us though we could never have had it by our efforts. Surely, unto our Lord we are returning. O Allah, we ask You on this our journey for goodness and piety, and for works that are pleasing to You. O Allah, lighten this journey for us and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One in Whose care we leave our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from this journey's hardships, and from the wicked sights in store and from finding our family and property in misfortune upon returning.’

2. Entering the state of Ihram

At the Meeqaat, say the Talbiya below and make Niyah (intention) for Umrah (this puts you in the state of Ihram) say لَبَّيكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمرَةً (Labbaika Allahumma Umrathan) Meaning: ‘Here I am O Allah for Umrah.’

If you fear that something might prevent you from completing your Umrah, then make the condition below so that you don’t have to give Fidyah (compensation) if something goes wrong. Make the condition by saying: فإِنْ حَبَسنِي حابسٌ فَمَحِلِّي حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي (Fa in Habasanee Haabisun fa maHillee Haithu Habasthanee) Meaning: ‘If any preventative thing prevents me, then my exiting of Ihram is wherever it is that I am prevented.’

Repeat the Talbiya as much as you can (loudly for men), until you begin the Tawaf say لَبَّيكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيكَ، لَبَّيكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيكَ، إِنَّ الحَمدَ وَالنِّعمَةَ لَكَ وَالمُلكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ (alternatively:) say لَبَّيكَ إِلَهَ الحَقَّ [English]

(Labbaika Allahumma labbaik, labbaika laa shareeka laka labbaik. Inna alhamda wa-ni’mata laka walmulk, laa shareeka lak) Meaning: ‘Here I am, O Allaah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner.’ (Labbaika ilaahal Haqq) Meaning: ‘Here I am, O God of Truth.’

3. Tawaf around Ka’bah (7 circuits)

Have Wudu for Tawaf from start to finish.

Enter the Mosque with right foot, say Dua of entering the mosque. بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ [English]

(Bismillāhi, wassalaatu wassalaamu 'alaa rasulillaah. AllaahummaftaH lee abwaaba raHmatik.) Meaning: ‘In the Name of Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open before me the doors of Your Mercy.’

Before beginning Tawaf, uncover right shoulder (for men).

Stop saying Talbiya when starting Tawaf, start Tawaf at the black stone, raise right hand toward it and say Bismillah Allah Akbar. (Only say Bismillah at the beginning of 1st circuit).

Say any Dua you want or recite Quran while making Tawaf.

Men should walk fast in the first 3 circuits if not crowded, and normally in the remaining 4.

Touch the Yemeni corner every time if not crowded.

From the Yemeni corner to the black stone, every time say رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ [English]

(Rabbanaa aatina fi-dunya Hasanathan wa fil aakhirah Hasanathan wa qina Azaab an-naar) Meaning: ‘Our Lord, give us that which is good in this world and that which is good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.’

Every time you pass the Black Stone, raise right hand toward it, say Allah Akbar (without Bismillah).

Complete 7 circuits, ending at the black stone, don’t say Allah Akbar or raise your hand, then cover right shoulder again (for men). This ends your Tawaf.

4. Sunnah prayer behind Maqam Ibrahim

Go to an area behind Maqam Ibrahim & say وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقامِ إِبْراهِيمَ مُصَلًّى (wattakhizoo mim Maqaami Ibraaheema musallaa) Meaning: ‘And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer.’

Pray 2 sunnah Rak'ahs, after Faatiha read suratul Kaafiroon in the 1st Rak'ah, suratul Ikhlas in the 2nd. …(قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ) …(قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ)

Drink Zamzam, then wipe your head with it. (Note that Zamzam is for whatever it is drank, so you can make Dua.)

5. Going between Safa & Marwa (7 circuits)

Approach Safa & say إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَآئِرِ اللَّهِ (Innas-safaa walmarw'ata min shaaa'iri llaahi) Meaning: ‘Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.’ نَابدَأُ بما بَدَأَ اللهُ بهِ(Nabdau bima bada-Allahu bihi) Meaning: ‘We begin by that which Allah began.’ [say these only once at the beginning, don’t repeat it later.]

Climb Safa, face Ka'bah, raise hands, make the following Dua

Say اللَّهُ أَكبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكبَرُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَاّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَاّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ، أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ، وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ، وَهَزَمَ الْأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ [English]

(Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Laa ilaaha illallaah waHdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul mulku wa lahul Hamdu Wa huwa A'laa kulli shay-in qadeer. Laa ilaaha illallaahu waHdah, anjaza wa'dahu wa naSara a'bdahu wa hazamal aHzaaba waHdah.) Meaning: ‘Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant and single-handedly defeated the allies.’

Then you should make your own Dua, then say the prescribed Dua before, then make your own Dua again, then say the prescribed Dua before.

Then you should go to Marwah. You can say any Dua you want or recite Quran while going between Safa and Marwah and back.

In the area between the two green markers, men should run fast.

Upon reaching Marwah, you have completed the 1st .

Make the same Dua as before, Allah Akbar x3... own Dua x2.

Go back to Safa, this counts as the 2nd circuit.

Complete 7 circuits, ending at Marwah. This ends your going between Safa and Marwah.

6. Shave / cut the hair

Shave (men only) or cut hair.

This ends your Umrah, and you exit Ihram.

You can now change your clothes, and the things that were not allowed during Ihram are now permissible for you.

Things that are forbidden in the state of Ihram: (For both MEN and WOMEN:) 1. Removing anything from your skin, hair or nails. 2. Letting any perfume or scent touch your body or clothes. 3. Having intercourse and touching with desire. 4. Hunting game animals. 5. Entering into a marriage contract, or making a marriage contract for someone else. (For MEN only:) 1. Wearing sewn clothes (stitched to fit the body), like shirts and pants. 2. Covering the head. 3. Wearing footwear that covers the heel, ankle and top of the foot. (For WOMEN only:) 1. Wearing a Niqab (a covering veil that fits the face) and wearing gloves.
